Tips For Landscaping Your Craftsman-Style Home

Blog

If you recently purchased a Craftsman-style home that is in need of serious landscaping help, then you will be happy to know there are some simple things you can do to make the unique style of your home shine. Even if you have a small budget, with some time and creativity, you can make your home look wonderful.

Here are some tips to help get your landscaping project started:

Remove Overgrown Brush and Plants

In order to let light into your home while also protecting the exterior surfaces from wood damage, keep all of the brush trimmed down below the height of your home's windows and planted at least a foot away from the foundation. If you have older landscaping that is growing too close to the foundation or is blocking windows, then you should either severely trim it back or just remove it altogether. By starting with a new bush, you will have less overall growth to trim back each year and the new plants will give a fresh look to the yard.

Plant Fast-Growing Trees

While you do not want large trees planted too close to your home, Craftsman-style homes are meant to look like they are part of nature. If your land lacks large, mature trees, then you should consider planting some fast-growing species, such as:

  • Chinese elm

  • magnolia

  • sweet gum

In addition, if you live in an area where bamboo will grow, then a small stand of bamboo will look wonderful along the side of your Craftsman home.

Edge Linear Areas with Plants, Stone, or Brick

The square columns and gabled roofs of your Craftsman home will be highlighted with the use of plants, stone, or brick edges along all of the walkways, driveway borders, and linear planter areas in your yard. The walkway areas should be lined by low-growing plants that produce only a single color of flowers.

If your home has stonework or woodwork along its foundation, then you can use a similar stone or brick as edging material. For a subtle look, you can use a smaller rock or brick on the walkways to highlight their edges in a way that is not quite so overstated as to use full-sized materials.
